DR. JANA TRAN, PHD
Dr. Jana Tran is a licensed psychologist who earned a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Houston. She first worked with combat Veterans at the Michael E. Debakey VA Medical Center, specializing in evidence-based treatments for PTSD, including Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, and CBT for Insomnia and Nightmares. Next, as a staff psychologist at the Houston Fire Department, she responded to critical incidents and provided therapy to first responders, developing an additional specialization in couples therapy. Most recently, she worked at NASA conducting astronaut trainings and mission support.
Dr. Tran is now in full-time private practice, where she integrates her specialties and offers trauma-focused couples therapy. Rather than treating trauma and couples work as separate endeavors, she provides a unified space for exploring how each person's trauma history and learned coping patterns contribute to conflict and disconnection.
Dr. Tran grounds her work in Emotion Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT-C), which involves actively mapping the cycle of conflict, or the pattern of reactions that lead to escalation, so that both partners can see the dynamic clearly and begin to step outside of it. She also draws on other frameworks, such as the Gottman Method, to help couples build concrete skills for de-escalating conflict and engaging in productive repair conversations. Throughout this work, couples develop a shared language and a clearer path toward rebuilding emotional safety.
With her background in PTSD treatment, Dr. Tran helps couples identify trauma triggers and protective responses and connect them to their conflict cycle. Couples often discover how one partner's wounds directly activate the other's. She incorporates approaches such as Somatic Experiencing and Parts Work (or Internal Family Systems) to help partners navigate these raw spots, regulate their nervous systems, and begin to recognize and respond to each other with compassion. As that recognition deepens, so does the connection.
Dr. Tran developed a deep respect and appreciation for operational populations through her years of direct service alongside them. She is passionate about continuing to serve these communities and is committed to the lifelong endeavor of cultural humility. She meets clients with curiosity and an understanding of cultural values such as mission over self, the stigma around help-seeking, and the ways that operational stress can shape both the individual and the relationship at home.
Dr. Tran is licensed in Texas and has the Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology (APIT) in all states except Alaska, California, Hawaii, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, and New Mexico.
KARLEE DAVIS, LICSW
I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker and EMDR Certified Therapist in West Virginia. I received my Master of Social Work degree from West Virginia University. I spent much of my career working with individuals having trouble in life due to various aspects of trauma, such as recent traumatic events, chronic traumatic stress, or abuse.
I founded Begin Counseling in 2023 as the need for culturally competent professional support for first responders became increasingly apparent to me. I have worked in private practice counseling since 2007, which led to my specific interest, research, and advanced training in working with first responders. I believe these individuals are often underappreciated and misunderstood within our society. The experience and knowledge I acquire from knowing and working with those of you in law enforcement, fire service, emergency medical services, emergency communications, and the military is the driving force for increasing access to genuine help for those who would otherwise never seek professional counseling.
Counseling is tailored to your unique needs. For those desiring a Christian perspective, biblical principles and beliefs can be incorporated and prioritized in therapy. The therapeutic relationship is a key component of the counseling process, and you will be provided with a comfortable presence to facilitate your goals.
With every new client I meet, I am humbled by the opportunity to learn your story and bear witness to your deepest hurts and greatest victories. I recognize that deciding to start therapy can sometimes be uncomfortable; you will receive a welcoming, confidential counseling experience at Begin. I am committed to establishing and growing a practice that our community can trust to provide competent trauma treatment and where the quality of life can be improved for public safety professionals, their families, and anyone seeking help from us.
